At over seven thousand feet above sea level the air at Beaver Creek was thin, certainly thinner than I expected. When I arrived at the conference I thought the tinned oxygen provided by CIBC was a novelty.

Australian-listed South American-focused gold miner Troy Resources Ltd got whacked by the market earlier this year when negative drilling results from the Azimuth Resources' Karouni M&A asset in Guyana shortened what had been anticipated as the project's initial mine life. Despite this early setback Troy remains adamant it will be mining from Karouni "for a very long time".

Gold giant Newmont Mining Corp has reportedly secured the government permit it needed to start building its US$1 billion Merian gold project in Suriname. The project has been slated to commence production of more than 400,000oz per annum by the end of 2016.

The outspoken head of the National Mining Association in the US, Hal Quinn, has called for Washington to address inefficient federal permitting processes for new mines that could be holding back more major domestic projects like Tesla's proposed US$5 billion lithium-ion battery factory in Nevada.

Greenland is focusing on implementing a new mining strategy as part of a five-year government plan
Following the amendment of the Mineral Resources Act, the responsibilities of the former Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum as per January 1, 2013 have been divided among the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the Mineral Licence and Safety Authority and the Environment Agency for Mineral Resources Activities.
The mineral and hydrocarbon strategies from 2014-18 offer new specific proposals as to the direction in which Greenland should go over the next five years.
